Cycling on the Llyn Peninsula

There are many designated cycle paths to ride. Whether you prefer to ride on or off road, the Llyn Peninsula has an excellent choice of places to suit your style of riding.

The Lon Eifion track

One of the many near by cycle paths.

This scenic 12.5 mile cycle path has recently been upgraded and now has an excellent hard surface all the way. For much of its course it is wider than most cycle paths – as wide in fact as many country lanes. It skirts the western edge of the main mountains of Snowdonia with good views of the Nantlle ridge and, near Penygroes, a more distant glimpse of Snowdon. Heading south there are fine views of the Lleyn mountains dramatically descending to the sea. The northern half of the path passes close to several villages: Bontnewydd, Dinas, Groeslon and Penygroes. Adjacent to (but just off) the path there is a cafe at the Inigo Jones slate museum about 5 miles south of Caernarfon. It is open all year 10 am till 4 pm.

START: The northern end starts at grid ref 481625 (OS map No 115 Snowdon) 400 yards south of the large car park overlooking the harbour at Caernarfon castle (world heritage site). There is on road parking at the start of the path. The southern end is at Bryncir grid ref 479446 (OS map 123 Lleyn Peninsula). There is a small car park at Bryncir.

Coed-y-Brenin

Forestry Commission Wales’ mountain bike Mecca, Coed-y-Brenin forest is home to an ever increasing network of fantastic handbuilt all weather singletrack and even a dual slalom course. The technical roller coaster riding will have you grinning like a fool, with stunning mountain views of surrounding Snowdonia and the coast that’ll take your breath away.

Surfing

North Wales is a great place to learn new sports, especially the type that get your hair wet. Anything from the slow pace sports like kayaking and sailing to adrenalin filled white water rafting and surfing. The lakes, rivers and coast lines of North Wales are there waiting for you.

Our favourite spot for surfing is Hells Mouth near Abersoch, this amazing stretch of coast line is home to Wales’ best waves and could arguably be of the best locations in the country. If you don’t know how to surf, no problem, The West Coast Surf Shop offers lessons during summer months so why not try something new.

Surf Snowdonia

Scared of jellyfish?  North Wales is home to Britain’s only artificial surfing lake ‘Surf Snowdonia’. A man made lake with an almighty powerful wave machine which offers waves of multiple sizes suitable for beginners and professionals alike.  With a guaranteed wave to catch, its the perfect way to learn – Surf Snowdonia offer lessons for first timers which will leave you with new found love of water. Highly recommend, but do book in advanced.

If surfing is not your thing, maybe the more technical but slower pace of sailing is, there’s plenty of sailing clubs in the area offering one off lessons during the summer months, a great chance to learn new skills and potentially end up with a life long hobby.

And don’t forget your towel.

Zip Wire

North Wales is a great place to scare your socks off!  Zip World have opened 2x Zip wires at different locations in Snowdonia, both being within reasonable driving distance from the Glyn Y Coed.

Zip world velocity is located near Bethesda and is described as the “Longest zip line in the northern hemisphere” with speeds often exceeding 100 mph!  This has featured in many TV shows including the One Show and grabbed news headlines when it first opened. We highly recommend finding out why!

Titan in Blaenau Ffestiniog has the 4 fastest parallel wires in Europe with other activities including underground trampolines!

This subterranean playground now also has underground zip wires, something for a rainy day. http://www.zipworld.co.uk/caverns/

Beaches

We wont pretend that North Wales has the best weather, but those hot and sunny hot blue-sky days happen, there is nowhere else to be.

Being on a peninsula means we have plenty of breath taking South and West facing beaches so you can go home with a tan.

A great way to relax and take it easy, don’t forget to take a BBQ and some matches.
